There has been growing condemnation of war crimes alleged to have been committed by Russian troops in areas they temporarily held, including reports of what appear to be summary executions around the town of Bucha.
Western leaders are weighing further sanctions in response. On Monday America’s Treasury stopped Russia from using $600m in reserves held in American banks to make payments on its sovereign debt.
Imran Khan, Pakistan’s prime-minister, has thrown the country into constitutional chaos. As he faced a no-confidence vote on Sunday, one of his deputies dissolved parliament. Mr Khan called for fresh elections. The opposition, which the army may now support, swore to fight in the supreme court.
Viktor Orban Hungary’s populist prime minister, declared victory in the country’s general election. It will be the fourth term for Mr Orban, who has clashed with the EU and is on good terms with Vladimir Putin.
Cabinet ministers in Sri Lanka resigned en masse. The government has blocked social-media access and imposed a curfew in an attempt to contain public unrest triggered by an economic crisis.
The government of Peru declared a state of emergency in Lima, the capital, and the port city of Callao, to curb protests against the high costs of fuel and fertilisers.
